Before beginning the process of recovering gold from gold ore using aqua regia, it's important to gather all the necessary equipment and safety gear. This includes:
- A fume hood or well-ventilated area
- Rubber gloves and safety goggles
- Glass containers for mixing and storing chemicals
- Measuring tools such as pipettes and graduated cylinders
- A heating source, such as a hot plate or Bunsen burner
- A magnetic stirrer or stirring rod
- Chemicals: hydrochloric acid, nitric acid, sodium metabisulfite and urea
Once you have gathered all of your equipment and safety gear, you can begin the process of recovering gold from gold ore using aqua regia:
Crush and grind the gold ore to a fine powder. This will increase the surface area of the gold particles and make it easier for the aqua regia to dissolve the gold.
Mix one part hydrochloric acid and three parts nitric acid in a glass container. Be sure to add the acid to the container, not the other way around. This will help prevent any splashing or spilling of the acid.
Add the crushed gold ore to the acid mixture. You should see bubbles forming as the acid begins to dissolve the gold.
Heat the mixture gently. You can use a hot plate or Bunsen burner to heat the mixture, but be sure to do so in a fume hood or well-ventilated area to prevent the inhalation of toxic fumes.
Stir the mixture continuously. This will help to ensure that all of the gold is dissolved in the acid.
Once the gold is completely dissolved, add urea to the mixture. This will help to neutralize the acid and prevent the formation of toxic gases.
Filter the mixture to remove any impurities. You can use filter paper or a coffee filter to do this.
Add a reducing agent such as sodium metabisulfite to the filtered solution. This will cause the gold to precipitate out of the solution in the form of a brown powder.
Collect the brown powder and wash it thoroughly with water to remove any remaining acid or impurities.
Melt the brown powder to obtain pure gold.
It's important to note that recovering gold from gold ore using aqua regia can be dangerous if not done properly. The acids used in this process are highly corrosive and can cause severe burns and lung damage if inhaled. Be sure to work in a fume hood or well-ventilated area, wear rubber gloves and safety goggles, and follow all safety precautions to minimize the risk of injury or harm.
